AdAge: Garfield The Blog

Advertising Age - Garfield The Blog
Bob Garfield offers his thoughts (and criticism) on advertising, media, conversational marketing and what he calls Listenomics.
Why McCain Lost
What's so striking about this election is that we've seen it before, in 1992, when George H.W. Bush ran for re-election against a young Democrat named Bill Clinton. Here's a column I wrote back then. Tell me if it doesn't sound awfully familiar.
'Paging Dr. Mengele. Paging Dr. Mengele...'
Crispin Porter & Bogusky is not trying to elicit the most grotesque echoes of the Holocaust in its latest effort for VW. But, either due to an institutional tin ear or vast histroical ignorance, they've somehow managed to do it anyway.
Victory!

The blog Comcastmustdie.com was started 11 months ago as a way for disgruntled customers of the cable giant to vent grievances and possibly get Comcast to listen. While Bob Garfield, whose rants against Comcast started the "jihad," says the company still sucks, it is investing a lot of money to build better customer-relations management and has turned a corner in its corporate culture.

Lost Souls?
I didn't know Paul Tilley, the DDB creative executive who committed suicide a week ago, and I would never presume to divine what was going on in his life, much less his head, when he jumped from a Chicago hotel room to his death. But I do know this: In his last days, whatever else was tormenting him, he was also under professional and personal attack from persons unknown -- most of them, presumably, subordinates -- who used the shield of internet anonymity to mercilessly disparage him.

Let He Who Is Without Com Cast the First Stone
The site, comcastmustdie.com, finally went up Friday. Since then there have been more than 100 posts, mainly from frustrated Comcustomers, but also from Comcast employees and generally disgusted consumers of cable-telecom services far and wide.

Comcast Must Die: Chapter 4
Was traveling for the past few days, as one does in September, in Bulgaria. It was nice. The telephones worked. No such luck at home, where my wife has been haunted by the Ghost of Comcast.

Blueprint for Jihad
My customer-disservice experience with Qualmcast, unsurprisingly enough, turns out to be tragically commonplace. Carelessness. Indifference. Dishonesty. Highhandedness. These are chapters in the corporate playbook -- at least, if the responses to my last post are any indication.
