Here We Are Now, Entertain Us

Can the emotional pull of a tightly tuned 500 song radio station stand up to the diverse 10,000 songs on individual formats?

The San Jose Metro reports on the unusual return of a alternative rock format for San Jose’s FM 104.9. The Clear Channel radio station switched about a year or so ago to a Spanish music format, but in a crowded field, the format tanked in the ratings. Meanwhile, the loyal listeners kept up pressure in favor of the previous long-running format on station and Clear channel corporate management.

Now it appears that the station is an experiment for Clear Channel – the honchos seem to have decided to try to integrate the radio station format programming with interactive participation of the listeners instead of hiring any djs.
